Good Libations: Gin and Jam

GinJamSquare1

This happens to everybody, right? It's Monday night and you're watching The Voice and you'd really like a cocktail, but a quick look through your cabinet reveals that all your ingredients are completely gone. There's a bit of gin, but no Champagne, no lemons, no limes, no egg whites, nothing. What's a girl to do?

Well, I guess I could just drink the gin straight, but I haven't drunk straight gin since I was 14 and picked up my voice teacher's water glass by mistake.

Anyway, my drinks cupboard was bare, but there was some jam in the house. Back when Nick and I were in New York, we had some very lovely cocktails over at Madame Geneva, and I remembered they had several gin and jam cocktails.

This is my jam:

Cherry Mint Jam
2 oz gin
1 tablespoon jam (I used sour cherry jam this time, but you can use anything)
5 fresh mint leaves (my mint plant is the only plant that appears to be surviving in my apartment)

Shake the gin, jam, and mint leaves with ice, then strain into a collins glass and top with soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Later on I acquired lemon juice but ran out of soda, so I made this, which was fabulous:

Gin and Jam
2 oz. gin
1 tablespoon jam (we used sour cherry this time, but you can use anything)
.5 oz fresh lemon juice

Shake with ice and strain into a rocks glass that also has ice in it.
